What is Plantar Fasciitis?

Plantar Fasciitis is characterized by pain located to the underside of the foot – anywhere from the heel bone along the underside of the foot arch. Typically in the early stages (and this can be confusing) it is made worse, not better after a period of inactivity.  For example getting out of bed first thing in the morning or after sitting down for a while you can experience acute pain to the underside of the foot causing you to limp.  However ‘strangely’ for most of you this horrible pain can ease off until there is almost no pain, after just a few minutes of walking.  Unfortunately the cycle restarts after the next period of rest.  In the worst cases, pain can be felt all the time when weight bearing.

Plantar Fasciitis

For quite a number of patients, pain to the underside of the heel bone is not the only pain you feel. You can also feel:

  • Pain radiating on the instep and along the underside of the foot to the toes
  • Pain to the back of the heel bone and/or on the inside/outside of the back of the heel bone
  • Pain and/or tightness radiating to the calf muscles
  • Pins and needles or numbness in the sole of the foot

Many of you may well have already tried to get yourself better – stretching exercises, massage, advice on the internet as well as the traditional routes of pain relief – medications and gels from the pharmacy or GP and even possibly steroid injections. But what if all of this has not worked, what then?  Are you destined to suffer with that intrusive and very limiting pain for the rest of your life? Thankfully no!
